Mira ’ s wind explored in scattering infrared CO lines

چکیده
We have observed the intermediate regions of the circumstellar envelope of Mira (o Ceti) in photospheric light scattered by three vibration-rotation transitions of the fundamental band of CO, from low-excited rotational levels of the ground vibrational state, at an angular distance of β ∼ 2 − 7 away from the star. The data were obtained with the Phoenix spectrometer mounted on the 4 m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak. The spatial resolution is approximately 0.5 and seeing limited. Our observations provide absolute fluxes, leading to an independent new estimate of the mass-loss rate of approximately 3× 10M⊙ yr, as derived from a simple analytic wind model. We find that the scattered intensity from the wind of Mira for 2 < ∼ β < ∼ 7 decreases as β, which suggests a time constant mass-loss rate, when averaged over 100 years, over the past 1200 years. Modelling CO emission from Mira’s wind
We have modelled the circumstellar envelope of o Ceti (Mira) using new observational constraints. These are obtained from photospheric light scattered in near-IR vibrational-rotational lines of circumstellar CO molecules at 4.6μm: absolute fluxes, the radial dependence of the scattered intensity, and two line ratios. Further observational constraints are provided by ISO observations of far-IR e...
متن کاملCometary Astropause of Mira Revealed in the Far-infrared
Evolved mass-losing stars such as Mira enrich the interstellar medium (ISM) significantly by their dust-rich molecular wind. When these stars move fast enough relative to the ISM, the interaction between the wind and ISM generates the structure known as the astropause (a stellar analog of the heliopause), which is a cometary stellar wind cavity bounded by the contact discontinuity surface betwe...
متن کاملBorn-again Protoplanetary Disk around Mira B
TheMiraAB system is a nearby ( 107 pc) example of awind accreting binary star system. In this class of system, the wind from amass-losing red giant star (Mira A) is accreted onto a companion (Mira B), as indicated by an accretion shock signature in spectra at ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths. Using novel imaging techniques, we report the detection of emission at mid-infrared wavelengths betwee...
متن کاملThe derivation of pulsation velocities from Doppler line profiles in M-type Mira variables
Model atmospheres for pulsating Mira variables have been used to examine the correction factor that should be used to convert radial velocities derived from the Doppler profiles of observed infrared lines into the velocities immediately above and below the strong shock in the atmosphere. The correction factor varies by a moderate amount depending on the lines selected. Correction factors of ∼1....
متن کاملA CO(3{2) Survey of Nearby Mira Variables
A survey of CO(3–2) emission from optically visible oxygen–rich Mira variable stars within 500 pc of the sun was conducted. A molecular envelope was detected surrounding 36 of the 66 stars examined. Some of these stars have lower outflow velocities than any Miras previously detected in CO. The average terminal velocity of the ejected material was 7.0 km s 1, about half the value found in Miras ...
